The Many faces Of Ayu

GOING NATIVE: Ayu poses regally outside a Hong Kong restaurant. In the territory for the making of her latest photo album, the superstar and her record company are refocusing on Asia in part due to a slumping market at home

IN HER ELEMENT: Ayu has an uncanny knack for finding styles that appeal to Asian audiences. "The kids love everything about her," Says MTV Asia producer Mishal Varma. "She's got her finger on the pulse, quite like Madonna does"

A QUEEN'S DEBUT: Ayu rocks the 2002 MTV Asia music awards in a kimono she designed bearing the Japanese characters for 'Love', 'Peace' and 'Future'. She also took home the award for Most Influential Japanese singer in Asia

SURF'S UP: Ayu's personal style goes beyond the teeny-bopper look of most pre-packaged J-pop stars, but she knows she's in the business of giving people what they want: "I understand it's my role to realize people's dreams," she says

TINY DANCER: The diminutive Ayu sports a pair of shades that would impress Elton John. Last year, her eyewear choices sparked mad runs on oversized glasses from Shibuya to Singapore

STEPPING OUT: Ayu hits the red carpet at the MTV Asia Music Awards in Singapore with the Avex records exec who discovered her, Masato "Max" Matsuura

SHOWING OFF: Ayu sports a typically eclectic outfit outside a traditional Cantonese dai pai dong, or food court, in Hong Kong. '"If we stock what she's wearing," says a Tokyo fashion buyer, "it's guaranteed to sell."
